Bio
Attorney Hungkyu Chun is a manager of Chun & Associates, PLLC, and an attorney at law admitted to New York State. Mr. Chun has gone through similar concerns and life matters as you have had. As a father of three children, a son of senior parents, a professional firm / multi-national company employee, a passive investor in real estate, an owner of a business, and an immigrant, Mr. Chun has built up professional competency and an empathetic mind that match your specific matters.
While dealing with complex tax and business matters for US corporations, foreign-owned companies doing business in the US, and high-wealth families, Mr. Chun was privileged to be a volunteer of a community for disabled people and their families. Mr. Chun found that the previous estate planning legal services for such families were so one-time transactional and were not adequately followed up. Some important assets remain outside the trust, and hourly legal service charge experiences discouraged such families from contacting their previous lawyers for any questions.
Mr. Chun is committed to being a relational lawyer as opposed to a transactional lawyer meaning that the engagement is the starting point of long-term relationships with his clients. Mr. Chun considers the unique situations and needs of each client, and provides premium and affordable service on a flat fee basis.

To pursue my long-term career aspiration to be a lawyer who helps individuals and supports the neighbors and community, I decided to run my own law firm practicing tax, business and estate planning after my tax law career as a tax director at a multi-national public company. While dealing with complex tax and business matters for US corporations, foreign-owned companies doing business in the US, and high-wealth individuals, I was privileged to be a volunteer for a community for disabled people and their families. There, I found that the previous estate planning legal services for such families were one-time transactional and were not properly followed up.
Many estate plans done for such families remain incomplete, still wanting for transferring the home titles into their living trust. Their lawyers did not follow up with the completion of funding clientsโ assets into the living trust. Moreover, some of the new assets like new business interests or newly inherited property stayed outside their previous estate plan. Families with people with special needs were under a high demand for day-to-day caregiving work, and some of them were almost in a depressed mode. It appears that their previous lawyers did not consider the unique situations of such families and finalized the one-time deal by providing just documents. Such families did not want to raise questions to previous lawyers because of hourly charge concerns. Parents of disabled children did not even have any plan to be ready for their possible incapacitated status although they went through their estate planning process. I further found that this type of estate planning is a very common and widely accepted practice in a traditional estate planning area.
However, my passion for being a lawyer who provides clients with true solutions and values drove me to look for a new practice model. It was a great luck and privilege for me to find that other estate planning lawyers have already felt the same as me on the traditional practice model and formed a professional group called โPersonal Family Lawyer,โ that approaches the law practice differently from the conventional model. This group emphasizes the long-term relationship with clients rather than the short-term transactional one with clients. The long-term relationship here can be illustrated such that the Personal Family Lawyers review the estate plan every three years for free to check whether the plan is still working in any new legislative changes, new events in family dynamics, and new financial positions. Under their internal protocols, Personal Family Lawyers maintain good succession plans and country-wide networks to serve their clients similarly, even when their Personal Family Lawyers no longer practice or move away to another state. This group generally adopts the flat fee policy to remove any clientsโ surprises in billing amount and encourage the clientsโ approach to their lawyers.
Estate planning is not just to reduce the probate court burden, nor just to save taxes. Good estate planning lawyering skills enable clients to leave their lifetime legacy and non-monetary value to their descendants and keep their family members in accord. Personal Family Lawyers are supposed to record the interview with clients and encourage clients to leave their messages to their loved ones to pass on more than their money, but also their intellectual, spiritual, and human assets.
As a member of the Personal Family Lawyer group, my law firm practice aligns with the value and approaches of the Personal Family Lawyer group. My law firm considers the new engagement the starting point of the continued relationship. My firm reviews clientsโ plans every three years at no additional charge. My firm is the best fit for people who donโt just want to leave their family a set of documents that may or may not work, but instead want to use the estate planning process to pass on a legacy of love and care, and keep their family out of court and out of conflict. My firm fee is based on the affordable flat fee policy. My firm considers the unique situations and needs of each client.
On a personal note, I am a dad of three children, a gardener, a hiker, and am aware that my estate planning is not for me but for the people I love the most. So, before we start talking about you and the people you love the most, please feel free to ask me about me, the firm, or anything else.
